Sparwood’s Search and Rescue hopes a $5 million BC Government grant can help them rebuild after a massive fire.
This from the East Kootenay Director of BCSARA Ed Ehrler, as new funding was announced for ground search and rescue operations.
The Elk Valley based group is facing over $275,000 in damages after a fire destroyed much of their facility and equipment last December.
Ehrler expects rebuilding efforts to see some progress within the next month.
“Just about to start demolition in the next month or so to start tearing things apart and rebuilding,” Ehrler says. “We’re hoping to have the building back up and running within the next six months. Some of it is going to depend on funding, there’s a bit of extra work that we have to do with the building over and above the insured value, just to make it the right space for us to work efficiently in, so we actually are soliciting donations for that right now.”
The money from the BC government will also provide essential support for first responders and fund the continuation of the AdventureSmart program.
