SD5 hopes a rainbow crosswalk project at Fernie Secondary will make everyone at the school feel included.
This from superintendent Lynn Hauptman after the board approved the campaign to paint two rainbow crosswalks in support of the LGBTQ students.
Hauptman says the school board is very proud of the work that has been put into this idea.
“The school really wanted to do something.” explains Hauptman. “They’ve been doing a lot of work around being an inclusive school for everybody including the LGBTQ+ communities so they thought this would be a perfect way to start to really bring awareness and try to create that inclusive community within the school.”
Hauptman adds that she believes other schools will pick up on ideas like this to continue to push the message of inclusivity within the district.
“I’m just really proud of the work our staff and student are doing around acceptance and inclusivity.”
Not only will two crosswalks be painted at the school, but an additional four rainbow crosswalk will be painted in downtown Fernie as well.
