The two candidates who ran for the BC NDP in our local ridings are applauding a historic agreement between their party and the Greens to form a minority government.
Randal Macnair, who lost to Liberal Tom Shypitka in Kootenay East in the May 9th vote, believes this is what British Columbians want.
The former Fernie Mayor goes on to say he believes a minority government between the New Democrats and Greens is a step in the right direction for the province.
Macnair suggests it promotes inclusivity in politics and allows representatives to work together to bring all ideas to table. He believes this could result in better government.
Columbia River – Revelstoke New Democrat nominee Gerry Taft agrees this is the right move for the province.
Taft, who was defeated by Doug Clovechok of the Liberals, suggests voters want new ideas and new energy in Victoria.
He claims he consistently heard during the election campaign that British Columbians are tired of Christy Clark.
Taft, who still sits as the Mayor of Invermere, also criticizes Clovechok’s campaign slogan of the Columbia River-Revelstoke needing a voice in government.
The riding had be represented by New Democrat MLA Norm Macdonald since 2005, despite the Liberals ruling the province with a majority since 2001.
Taft says this suggested the Liberals were expected to form government again, and believes that is fundamentally wrong and has risk because, as we’ve learned, you cannot guarantee who will win an election.
Taft goes on to say we need to look at governments who serve all people in all regions.
Details of the deal have not yet been released but both the NDP and Greens are expected to sign the agreement Tuesday afternoon.
NDP Leader John Horgan says his caucus will review the proposed deal in the morning and he expects unanimous support.
Green Leader Andrew Weaver says his three-person team has already signed on.
Stay tuned for more reaction from local Liberal MLA-designates and Green Party candidates.
