The City is applying to the Federal Gas Tax Fund to assist with upgrades planned on Victoria Avenue.
They hope to secure between $2-3 million for a new sewer trunk and road surfacing.
In the 1980s, a sewer trunk project upgraded the capacity of this pipeline, however the original 1962 sewer line in this section is now undersized and reaching the end of its expected lifespan.
The City is also applying for up to $1 million dollars for a so-called Community Sidewalk Network Connections projects.
Cranbrook is missing many sections of sidewalk throughout town due to varied historical development and changing land uses.
Mayor Lee Pratt says Victoria Ave. is in rough shape and these are two projects that need to be addressed sooner or later.
Pratt says if they can land the grants it will not only speed up the process but the costs won’t land on taxpayers.
Cranbrook already budgeted $14.8 million dollars in 2017 for their extensive capital roads program.
$10 million of that was through borrowing.
