The equipment is being funded in part by almost $260,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust.
Fernie, along with counterparts in Golden and Nelson, will obtain a Human External Transport System.
The equipment enables rescuers and those being rescued to be transported by rope, slings and harnesses under a helicopter.
While the Golden and Nelson teams already offered this service, Fernie will now be providing it for the first time.
The Fernie outfit will now service Cranbrook to the BC-Alberta border.
