A lengthy closure on Highway 1 near Golden will drive more traffic through the East Kootenay this weekend.
This from the RCMP, who says flooding and debris near the Camp Creek Bridge will close the highway for at least two days.
Dale Sommerville with East Kootenay Traffic Service expects more vehicles travelling south on Highway 95, bottlenecking near Cranbrook.
“There’s basically two major routes in and out of BC to Alberta,” Sommerville says. “You shut down 50 per cent of that capacity and what’s going to happen? That 50 per cent of the capacity is going to move over to Highway 3.”
He adds this could create long traffic line-ups and frustrated drivers.
“The biggest message the police would like to put out there is patience, patience, patience,” Sommerville says. “We all have important places to be and go and we all need to get there safety. Our job as police is to make sure you do that, so we will be out there in force ensuring that everyone is being as patient as possible and driving as safe as possible.”
Sommerville urges local drivers to stick close to home this weekend and be patient if you do have to travel.
