The Cranbrook Poverty Reduction Committee wants to partner with the City to draft an official strategy to combat the issue locally.
The group offered City Council a preview of their poverty reduction report this week before its expected released this fall.
The Committee’s Kerri Wall says a strategy would set responding goals for Cranbrook and outline how those would be achieved.
Wall says Cranbrook struggles with homeless and unemployed populations and it would be a much more prosperous community if those people were supported.
The committee is also asking the City to hire a community development officer.
The aim is to help the over 40 local agencies trying to address poverty coordinate their efforts and streamline resources.
Other initiatives such as living wage and affordable housing studies are also underway.
A housing summit is also expected to be held in Cranbrook this fall.
