Two more fatal drug overdose deaths were reported in the East Kootenay in May.
The BC Coroners Service has released the May numbers for unintentional illicit overdose deaths.
The report includes two more deaths in the region, after the first victim of the year died in March. So far, four deaths related to drug overdoses have been reported in the East Kootenay this year.
A total of 129 suspected overdose deaths occurred across the province in May.
That`s up 158 per cent over the same time last year.
So far this year, 617 fatal drug overdoses have been reported in BC, compared to 935 in 2016.
A public emergency was declared last Spring by BC’s Provincial Health Officer, due to the significant increase in fatal overdoses linked to drugs like fentanyl.
