A driver has been fined in Cranbrook after throwing a lit cigarette out of his moving vehicle.
Police were called after a woman claimed she saw a man toss a cigarette out his window on 14th Avenue, landing on dry grass.
Constable Katie Forgeron says the RCMP are taking incidents like this seriously with the current wildfire risk.
“Just looking around the province, 40,000 people have already been displaced due to wildfires in and around cities,” Forgeron says. “Had that happened to a city of Cranbrook, it would be devastating, life altering.”
No fire started from the incident.
Forgeron says officers caught up with the vehicle from out-of-province, issuing a 575 dollar fine.
“We need to be more vigilant as a community and to call in when we see these things,” Forgeron says. “We don’t want what’s happening in Williams Lake and Quesnel to be happening here in Cranbrook.”
