The City of Kimberley meant no disrespect in demolishing their old cenotaph.
This after Military Ames called out city staff for the deconstruction of the war memorial last week before the site could be decommissioned.
Mayor Don McCormick says they were under the belief repatriation efforts had already been finished.
“Clearly that was not the case and regrettably, we started to demolish that before there was a communication with Military Ames on the whole decommissioning,” McCormick says. “It is what it is. Here we are today with a situation that is regrettable from both parties point of view.”
Kimberley’s Operations Manager has apologized for the miscommunication.
A ceremony celebrating the opening of the new memorial park was held July 15th.
Before that, flagstones and plaques were taken from the retired monument for the new site’s use.
The previous cenotaph had been in place for over 60 years.
