Another illicit drug overdose death has been reported in the East Kootenay.
The BC Coroners Service has released stats from July of this year, showing the amount of suspected overdose deaths in British Columbia.
One death believed to be connected to drugs has been reported locally in July, bringing the East Kootenay’s total for 2017 to four.
That’s still among the lowest number of fatalities reported province wide, equal to British Columbia’s Northwest region.
There were 91 suspected drug overdoses in July, a 30 percent increase over the same time last year.
So far this year, 819 fatal drug overdoses have been reported, compared to 935 from all of 2016.
A public emergency was declared last Spring by BC’s Provincial Health Officer, due to the significant increase in fatal overdoses linked to drugs like fentanyl.
