An anonymous $25,000 gift to the Sparwood Community Fund may go a lot further than the donor intended.
The donation, it’s source disclosed, was announced last week, pushing the fund’s total to more than $60,000.
Spokesperson Lynette Wray says that number could grow significantly as they are working on partnership with the Columbia Basin Trust which has opportunities for matching grants.
Wray says they looked forward to making an announcement with CBT later this Fall.
The Sparwood Fund started with donations from the District Council and Sparwood Future society.
Wray reveals they’ve actually had a long-standing relationship with the recent anonymous donor who didn’t want to reveal their identity.
The same benefactor also handed over $25,000 to the Fernie Community Fund.
The capital from these funds is permanently invested and annual interest is used as grants for local community groups every year.
Wray says they need members on the steering committee to help allocate grants to local groups.

Wrays explains the fund goes toward initiatives that focus on culture, recreation, heritage and improving the community.
