Fernie’s Mayor is bursting with ‘pride’ over how welcoming she says the city has become to LGBTQ culture.
This as the first ever Elk Valley Pride Festival wrapped up over the weekend.
Mary Giuliano was happy to serve as the event’s opening speaker.
“We are supposedly created equal, but in reality, we are not created the same,” Giuliano says. “If we’re not so-called normal, there is a lot of discrimination and I’ve seen that over the years.”
She says she’s always believed you need to accept people for who they are.
“I’m just so proud as a long-time resident of Fernie and as the Mayor to see people in the Elk Valley and in Fernie so open to diversity,” Giuliano says.
Fernie installed its first rainbow crosswalk June 1st, recognizing students of the LGBTQ community at Fernie Secondary.
Giuliano says this was a big step toward celebrating diversity in the city.
