A State of Local Emergency has been declared in Fernie, following an ammonia leak that killed three people at the Memorial Arena.
The city says it made the declaration due to a hazardous materials release threatening property and life.
The State of Local Emergency will remain in effect for seven days until October 24th unless cancelled by order of the City of Fernie or the Minister responsible.
All homes between 9th Street and 13th Street and Highway 3 and 6th Ave have been evacuated. Red Apple, 7-Eleven, and Trinity Lodge are included in the evacuation.
Streets surrounding the Arena are closed:
• 9th Street from Highway 3 to 6th Ave
• 6th Ave from 9th Street to 11th Street
• 11th Street between Highway 3 and 6th Ave.
Residents in the evacuation area have been provided overnight accomodations
Emergency Social Services will reopen in the morning as required.
