Cale Fleury is off to Regina.
President and General Manager Matt Cockell says it wasn’t an easy decision for the organization to send their former captain to the Pats.
“It was not something that we were looking for.” says Cockell. “Cale is a great player, great person [and he’s] been a tremendous person in the community.”
In exhange for Fleury the ICE acquired defenceman Jonathan Smart, forward Cole Muir, a second round draft pick in 2018, a sixth round draft pick in 2018 and a conditional second round draft pick in 2019.
Cockell says the move gives them more youth and helps toward building the roster moving forward.
“We gain a year [with Jonathan Smart], he’s an 18-year old player.” says Cockell. “Just looking ahead we have four 19-year old [defencemen] right now and just in terms of reseting our ages [he’s] a player that will be with us a couple of years.”
“Cole Muir is a player that our scouting staff and myself think has a bright future.” says Cockell. “He’s a guy that will really compliment the exciting group of young forwards that we have.”
The ICE also sent forward Barrett Sheen to the Moose Jaw Warriors for a 2018 fifth round pick.
“This is a good opportunity for [Barrett].” says Cockell. “He’s a guy who players hard and a presence on the ice that we’ll miss.”
Goaltender Kurtis Chapman was also reassigned to Junior ‘A’ with the Calgary Mustangs.
“Bailey Brkin is a year younger and we want to see what we have there.” says Cockell. “Duncan McGovern is a goalie we think has a real strong future and somebody that we were really excited to acquire.”
Kootenay’s roster has gotten younger with the moves made with a definite focus on the years to come.
“We’re excited about what we’re building.” explains Cockell. “It’s always difficult to make moves especially with great people but we’re very focused on what we’re trying to do and we think we have a tremendous group of players [with] some great leadership in the room.”
Cockell pointed out Colton Kroeker, Alec Baer, Colton Veloso and Brett Davis as players they are looking to lead the team moving forward.
Kootenay is back in action Tuesday night taking on the Central Dvision leading Medicine Hat Tigers.
