The Southeast Kootenay School District will be installing cameras onto a pair of Cranbrook buses.
The decision was made following a successful pilot project in Sparwood last year.
Chairperson Frank Lento says its a great way to deter drivers from passing illegally.
“Using some of the RCMP information, we thought it might be advisable given the circumstances of a couple of Cranbrook runs that would help us in the safety of students,” Lento says.
Lento says he would like to see the cameras installed as soon as possible.
“We’re interested in the safety of our students, doesn’t matter where they are,” Lento says. “These types of incidents are occurring and so we want to get rid of them. Some slight accident would be difficult to live with if this happened to some youngster.”
SD5 previously said their buses are passed hundreds of times a year.
