A District Councillor says affordable seniors housing is needed in Elkford.
Denise Bertrand will host a meeting 7 pm Wednesday night at the Community Conference Centre in the hopes of forming an Elkford Housing Society.
She says there are 890 elderly residents who have no options if they want to stay in the community.
“My philosophy is to keep the seniors here who built this community and want to stay with their families,” Bertrand says. “As a grand scheme of things, I would like to see affordable subsidized assisted independent living.”
Bertrand hopes to release a needs and demands survey to identify what kind of housing elderly residents want.
“We’re going to do a mass mail-out in January to all of the residents in Elkford, hopefully getting anybody who is 55+ to fill out the surveys,” Bertrand says. “Then we will contract a facilitator who will do the review of this survey.
Bertrand says the survey will help identify what services are needed in the district.
