Fernie Fire Department is doing their part to help the community’s less fortunate.
Crews are taking part in the annual Christmas Food Drive 5 pm – 8 pm Thursday night.
Chief Ted Ruiter says they are going door-to-door with the BC Ambulance Service.
“We’re going to get together with the ambulance personnel. We usually meet here at the fire hall,” Ruiter says. “What we will be doing is going around to certain areas of the Fernie community with our fire trucks and ambulances and collecting food.”
Ruiter says all donations collected will go to the Salvation Army food bank.
“They are very grateful for the work we do and its definitely a worthwhile cause,” Ruiter says. “Residents in the community assist us greatly with contributions of food and occasionally we get some toys. It certainly benefits people with some difficult needs.”
Ruiter says non-perishable foods are preferred, but they will also accept toys for kids.
