Conservation officers are investigating after finding a dead elk outside Sparwood.
Elk are out of season right now but CO Patricia Burley says Thursday morning they found a 5×5 bull who was shot and left on a private property northeast of the district.
She alleges the incident happened sometime late the night before or early that morning.
Burley says that means the animal was hunted at night, out of season and while the suspect was trespassing on private property.
All offences under the Province’s Wildlife Act, Burley almost gaffs when she points out it’s a lot of illegal activity and they would love to catch the individual(s) responsible.
Burley stresses they’ve seen a lot of wasted meat during this year’s firearm hutning season, which came to an end Thursday.
On the last day, she admits it’s especially frustrating to see another file come across her desk.
Another illegal kill, and more unnecessary waste of animal.
The Conservation Officer does goes on to say in this particular incident their number one concern is public safety considering someone was firing a gun at night.
Burley says CO’s are turning to the public for information.
She suggests it’s a small community, and someone likely saw or knows something.
