Fernie’s efforts to win a $250,000 in arena upgrades is getting an assist from small town Saskatchewan.
Kathy Heilman lives in Wilkie, which is roughly 160 km west of Saskatoon.
Heilman is pushing her community to garner votes for Fernie, some 770 km away, after the tragedy at the Memorial Arena last October.
She says Wilkie was going to enter the competition again this year, but they were moved by Fernie’s story.
“I don’t honestly know who made it, I can’t remember, but I was very moved by the way it was written,” Heilman says. “They talked about the tragedy and what happened and how it affected not just the families of the people who had passed, but the whole community. I got a hold of Helen and I said ‘read this, we have to help them.'”
She says Wilkie’s 2017 bid for Hockeyville had the support of Sylvan Lake, Alberta and felt they should “pay it forward.”
“When tragedy happens, whether it be the fire at Fort McMurray, the floods wherever, we step up to the plate and we help as much as we can,” Heilman says.
