RCMP want drivers to make sure their vehicles are safe for the roads.
East Kootenay Traffic Services conducted a maintenance checkstop on Highway 95A Tuesday afternoon targeting improper headlights, unsafe tires or cracked windshields.
Sergeant Don Erichsen says winter tires are key to staying safe in the region.
“Vehicles require either mud and snow tires or winter tires, Erichsen says. “We recently had a fatality in the Fernie area as a result of a vehicle that was travelling with summer tires during winter conditions.”
Erichsen says they were addressing a complaint of trucks using improper headlights, making it hard for others to see.
He adds people could be on the highway illegally if they have certain lights installed.
“There are head lamps out there that are far too bright and blinding to other motorists,” Erichsen says. “There’s different coloured lights that are offered for sale in different stores that are not legal and cannot be put on your vehicle, but drivers are not well informed as to what’s going on.”
Erichsen says numerous defects were addressed, no vehicles were impounded and a prohibited driver was caught behind the wheel.
