Kimberley residents will get their final say on controversial plans for a popular recreation site next month.
City Council continued their Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment process this week, passing the second reading of the new draft Monday night
They then scheduled a public hearing for February 19 at McKim Middle School theatre to hear input from residents before holding the final vote on the new OCP at a subsequent council meeting.
Some members of the public are opposed to the 24 acre Benchlands being designated for industrial development in the plan.
The land was earmarked in the 2005 OCP for industry but has become beloved for it’s picture-esque views.
Opponents argue they aren’t against industrial development but it has to be done responsibly.
The City says this is currently the best land available and attracting industry is vital for growth.
Council and staff anticipates the audience to be so significant next month they actually upgraded the venue to the McKim theatre after initially booking it at a much smaller venue.
