Teck says it will take four to six weeks to repair equipment after an explosion at its Elkview mine east of Sparwood.
A preliminary damage assessment of the sites dryer shows it will cost $5-10 million to fix the machine involved in what they’re calling a “significant pressure” event.
In the meantime the company says the operating is running at 80 per cent of planned production levels and will coordinate with other Elk Valley mines.
The mining giant expects to lose approximately 200,000 tonnes of clean coal in production.
The union representing workers at Elkview says the incident was an explosion and there is significant concern for the safety of its members.
The union says three similar incidents occurred in 2017.
