The Southeast Kootenay District wants to improve student safety at two of their schools.
The SD5 Board has approached the Ministry of Transportation about installing cross walks and flashing lights on Highway 3 near Jaffray School.
Manager of Operations Joe Tank says parents from Tie Lake are concerned about students crossing in times of heavy traffic.
“They want to walk from Tie Lake over to the school,” Tank says. “They feel its a concern of speed and traffic, so if kids are walking, we should have them safe crossing a major highway.”
Tank says they`ve also asked the City of Cranbrook for a crosswalk and flashing lights outside Steeples Elementary.
He says this has been an important project to parents sending their kids to class.
“There were concerns brought up of traffic around Steeples going quite fast,” Tank says. “The Parent Advisory Council thought that people weren’t seeing the signs. So any illuminated signs should help.”
If approved, he expects signage to be installed in the Spring.
