The District of Sparwood is the latest community in the region to introduce bear resistant garbage bins for residents.
Last night, Council approved spending around $315,000 for 1,719 containers for residents and businesses.
Director of Operations Tyler Madsen hopes Waste Management of Canada’s new service will be in place sometime this Spring.
“The system that they are going with is a semi-automated system which will include the carts delivered to each home,” Madsen says. “The bins will be picked up with a tipper on the back of the truck.”
Madsen says the new service frees up municipal staff for other work.
“For the most part, its to reallocate our workforce so that we can focus our services on other things such as roads and water and sewer,” Madsen says.
Madsen says they are also considering curbside recycling but further discussion is needed with residents, the Regional District of East Kootenay and Recycle BC.
Fernie announced earlier this month they would introduce automated garbage and recycling pick-up in June.
