Fernie is opening its doors to politicians from across the Kootenays this week.
The Association of Kootenay and Boundary Local Governments annual convention officially gets underway in the Elk Valley Wednesday.
The AKBLG represents municipalities and electoral areas throughout the south eastern portion of British Columbia, making decisions on regional issues to bring to the Province’s attention.
Mayor Mary Giuliano says they hope to discuss emergency preparation with delegates, following last year’s historic wildfire season.
“We have experts who will be talking about fires and what to do, how to be prepared,” Giuliano says. “We have people that will be discussing how to learn from Fort McMurray and the other fire disasters. We even have people talking about emergency powers for a community evacuation.”
Giuliano says this is a timely theme for the community, following the tragedy at the Memorial Arena last October.
Some of the resolutions up for discussion include intentional feeding of wildlife, cannabis tax revenue and the speculation tax.
