The District of Sparwood is looking to strengthen their emergency response team.
District Staff are looking for Emergency Support Services volunteers who can assist residents forced to leave their home in the event of a fire, flood or other disasters.
ESS Director Joyce Kutzner says they will provide training to anyone interested.
“Having team members who are trained and can react and be available for a disaster is definitely our main goal here,” Kutzner says. “Any training that is done is completely free, so it doesn’t cost the volunteers anything but a day of their time.”
Kutzner says the more people trained to help with evacuations, the better.
“What you are looking for is to build a great team, so that if someone can’t make it, there’s another one who can and you are not worried because you know they are trained,” Kutzner says.
ESS helped with the evacuations in Moyie during last year’s historic wildfire season.
Kutzner invites anyone who wants to take part to come out to their next team meeting 7 pm Thursday at the District’s Fire Hall # 1.
The program will also offer a training course on managing walk-in disaster volunteers Sunday, May 6th.
