Kimberley’s chief administrator says the city’s SunMine is setting a benchmark for sustainability.
It has generated more than $530,000 in revenue since beginning commercial operations in June 2015 and had more than $32,000 in reserves by the end of 2017.
Scott Sommerville spoke to the solar mine’s success at a recent tour.
He says “it’s been an award-winning project. It’s won 7 awards so far. It’s putting Kimberley on the map, not just in BC and the Kootenays but nationwide. People are hearing about Kimberley because of the SunMine”.
Some of those awards came from organizations like Clean Energy BC and Engineers Canada.
Commercial operations at the mine began nearly 3 years ago.
Sommerville says the solar initiative has drawn more than 2,000 visitors with demand for tours growing.
