The City of Fernie says an ongoing soil management plan will make fields safer for all user groups.
The program began at the end of May, with organic fertilizer and soil conditioner’s applied at the Max Turyk field to address concerns of pesticides and herbicides in city limits.
Parks and Facilities Manager Brett Logan says their goal is to do away with spraying pesticides completely.
“The products we are laying down, basically the kids can still play soccer right after we lay down the fertilizer,” Logan says. “There is no impact to the users and hopefully over time, the root structure underneath the turf is slowly going to get better and better.”
Logan says there won’t be immediate results with the new program.
He hopes improvements with soil quality over time will prevent weeds from taking root over the long term.
