Sparwood’s mayor says it’s time to pass the baton.
Cal McDougall says he won’t be seeking re-election in October’s municipal election.
He says he plans to enjoy retirement.
“I’ve put in four terms, 13 years, and I figure that it’s time to hand off the baton and move on. My wife retired last year, and I think we’ll probably to a little bit more travel and a little bit more golf.”
McDougal first became Sparwood’s mayor in 1995 and served for 9 years.
He took a 3 term break and was re-elected for another term in 2014.
McDougall says the economic downturn earlier this decade provided some challenges for his final term.
He says district council has moved past that and is heading in the right direction now.
“The last four years have been a bit of a challenge in that respect. But I think we’re coming out of it, and we’re coming out of it quite strong. So I’m happy with the way things are going right now.”
He would like to see the next district council continue to work with Teck to promote liveability in Sparwood.
Residents cast their ballots on October 20.
