The Columbia Valley RCMP detachment has a new top cop.
Sgt. Darren Kakuno is a few weeks into his new role as detachment commander.
He’s worked in Vancouver and Kelowna and was most recently stationed in Creston.
He says he’s happy to be in the East Kootenay.
“Once the family came along the work-life balance became more important to me, so that’s when we made the move out to Creston. When we arrived in Creston we fell in love with the Kootenays, so when the opportunity to transfer to Columbia Valley came up I jumped at that.”
Kakuno says his family is enjoying their time in the region.
He adds he’s beginning to gain familiarity with the detachment and the community.
“The first two weeks have been pretty busy for myself. I’m just trying to catch up on what’s been going on and what some of the local issues are. I’ve been meeting with local members and I’ve been starting to meet local elected officials.”
He hopes to carry out some of his initiatives for the detachment once he gets a better grasp of the area.
