2012-02-03 Ktunaxa nation concerned over idea of wolf cull
(By the Broadcast Center News Team) Deer culls seem to be popping up everywhere, but the provincial government is looking to conduct a wolf cull. Mountain caribou have been transferred to areas of the province where population numbers are dwindling and the provincial government is looking to cull wolves that would prey on these animals. Chair of the Ktunaxa Nation Council, Kathryn Teneese says killing wolves is going to lead to other problems. "We're just concerned that when we start with the wolves, then other species that would normally be part of what wolves eat, their numbers would grow out of control," Teneese says. "It's just a vicious circle as far as we're concerned and that's the reason for our opposition." Teneese says the nation was involved in this type of conversation years ago where it set up guidelines surrounding how to protect the mountain caribou. If the plan goes ahead, an aerial cull of wolves would be conducted. In a press release, the Ktunaxa Nation says its deeply opposed to killing wolfpacks for years to come. She adds that she has conducted research that indicates that wolves and the herd of caribou have very little interaction. | |
