Fernie’s Mayor says flood mitigation funding from the Province is certainly welcomed news.
Mary Giuliano is reacting to Thursday’s announcement that her community will receive $150,000 to help with flood planning and risk assessment.
She says they’re very thankful as they’re still trying to better prepare themselves after the high water event of 2013.
That’s when the city experienced its worst flooding in 50 years and caused over $500,000 in damage.
Giuliano says, since then, they’ve promoted a local fire fighter to Emergency Preparedness coordinator to lead efforts in the case any problems arise.
The Fernie Mayor admits she is a little concerned about potential flooding during the Spring freshet with a 99% snowpack in the East Kootenay currently.
Sparwood and Elkford also received $150,000 a piece from the BC Government for flood planning.
