The Fernie Chamber of Commerce`s call to regulate short-term rental properties is getting provincial attention.
The BC Chamber will support a motion co-authored in the Elk Valley, seeking new rules for services like AirBnB.
Fernie Executive Director Patty Vadnais says they are seeking a fair deal for hotel operators in the community.
“We know that the way people are buying and selling accommodation is changing. Its a new emerging market, a new business model,” Vadnais says. “At the provincial level, we are really looking to make sure that the rules are the same across the board. So we are looking to the province to adapt their regulation on accommodation sales.”
The City of Fernie is also pursuing action on this issue, approving development of a new policy for short-term rentals throughout the community.
Their goal is to have new regulations in place by the upcoming ski season.
