East Kootenay Traffic Services wants to make sure you stay safe on the highway this long weekend.
Inspector Dale Sommerville says this is one of the busiest weekends on area roads.
He says families are trying to enjoy one last long weekend before school starts, adding to the traffic.
“The fact that our weather forecast is hot and sunny is obviously going to increase traffic,” Sommerville says. “With all the fires going on in our local area, its creating a lot of smoke, a lot of hazards and a lot of road closures as well. Its going to be busy and we need your patience.”
He says with the increased traffic, local residents might want to avoid travel.
“The roads will be so busy that it is the RCMP’s opinion that if you don’t have to drive somewhere that is not necessary, we would recommend staying home and enjoying your beautiful country in your own backyard,” Sommerville says.
Sommerville adds if you plan to travel, be sure to check Drive BC for road closures and delays.
You can also check the BC Wildfires website for up-to-date details on blazes in the region.
