The Southeast Kootenay School District is closing two Elkford Schools until further notice in response to an Evacuation Alert in effect.
An Evacuation Alert was issued by the Regional District of East Kootenay, the District of Elkford and the District of Sparwood Tuesday due to the nearby White River Complex and Quinn Creek wildfire.
The notice includes properties north of the District of Sparwood to Bingay Creek, District of Elkford, Line Creek, Green Hills and Fording River Operations and all rural properties north of Sparwood.
SD5 must close schools that are in areas under an Evacuation Alert as it could be upgraded to an Evacuation Order at a moment’s notice.
Both Rocky Mountain Elementary School and Elkford Secondary School are affected by the closure and will be closed until further notice.
The school district says the safety of students and staff will always be their first priority.
SD5 will work with the Regional District and individual communities to give updates as soon as they are available and will be communicating with families through the School District website.
