One of the candidates in Cranbrook’s upcoming by-election wants to see the city grow as part of council.
Jon McWhirter has been involved in a number of businesses in the community over the past twenty years.
He says he had the opportunity to stay here and work while raising his family.
“I was fortunate enough to be able to stay and work post high school here and develop my career in different industries,” McWhirter says. “A lot of customer service management, a bit of a real estate background, so its a privilege to be able to say that I can raise my family here.”
The 41-year-old feels job creation is a necessity to keep the city’s youth from moving away.
“I would love for more people to experience how great it is to spend time here, to raise a family here,” McWhirter says. “Just trying to be able to keep our young adults here and those who want to live here being able to find sustainable work where they can raise their family and stay in town. That’s a huge one for me.”
McWhirter adds he wants to continue efforts to repair roads and infrastructure in Cranbrook.
He’s one of eight candidates hoping to fill the vacant council chair.
The Drive FM newsroom will be posting profiles of each of the eight candidates this week.
