Work is underway to expand Kimberley’s new Veteran Memorial Park.
Military Ames are planning to build two new memorial walls, recognizing soldiers with ties to the community who have passed away.
Coordinator Cindy Postnikoff says they are hoping to have the addition installed by next Spring.
“The plaques on the wall will be for military service and anyone in the community,” Postnikoff says. “I’ve been contacted by someone in Vancouver who has a connection to Kimberley and wants to memorialize her grandfather.”
Postnikoff adds an oak tree sapling from Vimy Ridge was added to the site last week.
“During that conflict, all of the oak trees were destroyed, but there was a fellow from Ontario who sent home a handful of acorns,” Postnikoff says. “So they were recently commissioned and some of the saplings returned to Vimy Ridge. We just feel so honoured to be able to get one.”
She says it commemorates the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge during World War I.
