Council unanimously supported applications this week for $150,000 needed for mitigation design work.
Economic Development Officer Kevin Wilson says the funds could cover 100 percent of the engineering costs if approved.
“We’re hoping to design an exposed channel that would run alongside Coronation Park and engineer the right size of storm water pipe to divert the flow into the stormwater system into Mark Creek,” Wilson says.
Wilson says the stormwater system is undersized, affecting 36 properties.
“When there’s rain on snow, the water gets backed up. It compounds the flooding issues in Morrison subdivision and floods into downtown,” Wilson says. “The purpose of this application is to engineer a solution and then use that information to find money to construct the solution.”
Morrison Sub was designated a flood plain by council after repeat high water events in 2012 and 2013.
Residents of that neighbourhood dealt with extensive water damage to their properties in those incidents
