Kimberley could be giving more power to its firefighters to enforce bylaws.
The city is in the process of modernizing their Fire Service regulations to bring them up to current provincial standards.
Chief Rick Prasad says the biggest change is the ability for firefighters to issue fines for major infractions like open burning during a ban and blocking hydrants..
He says this could help during BC’s busy wildfire season.
“We did have some open burning complaints, we respond to these even though these people know they shouldn’t be burning,” Prasad says. “We have no cost recovery capacity, so we’re building in some of that so we can try to get back some of our costs to respond to these incidents.”
The bylaw will be reviewed by council at a later date.
Fires of any kind were banned in Kimberley July after human caused blazes became a major concern.
