14 year old Donovan Graf broke both his legs and one arm when the vehicle his brother was driving collided with a semi truck last Saturday on Wardner-Fort Steele Rd.
Donovan’s brother Christopher didn’t suffer any serious injuries from the incident.
An online fundraiser has since collected more than $5,200 at the time of publication to help with Donovan’s medical bills as he recovers at the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
His mother Christine Graf tells The Drive in a phone interview from their hospital room, they are overwhelmed with the support and want to thank everyone from the first responders, to medical staff and those who donated money.
She compares their situation to the old adage “it takes a village to raise a child” and believes it’s another example of Cranbrook’s giving nature.
The family hopes to meet and thank all the people who’ve helped and have the opportunity to pay it forward.
Donovan’s mother admits they don’t even know some of the people’s names who stopped to assist at the scene of the crash but they want to find out so they can at least say thank you.
Christine says her son is still in pain and understand the road they have ahead of them but wants everyone to know he’s going to be OK.
Laying in his hospital bed, Donovan echoed the gratitude they have for everyone who came to his side.
He wanted to give a shout out to all his friends, who he says have been sending him love and telling him they’re ready to help when he gets back to school.
