The City of Fernie is asking residents for their thoughts on allowing distilleries along the highway corridor.
The municipality has begun a consultation process about amending the rules in the Official Community Plan.
Manager of Planning Patrick Sorfleet explains an applicant wants to renovate an existing building on 7th avenue and open a craft distillery but that area isn’t zoned for it.
Sorfleet explains the current rules were put in place after extensive consultation with residents who did not want industrial business along the corridor.
The applicant wants to produce up to 50,000 litres of spirits per year.
They suggest will stimulate economic growth and diversity of Fernie’s tourism market and property upgrades will improve visual aesthetics and revitalize the highway corridor.
Public consultation is in the very early stages and a public hearing is expected to be part of the process.
The City says its planning department will consider all questions and comments and will consult with respondents to address any concerns.
