Cranbrook RCMP are calling a case of duck deaths outside the Tamarack Centre a “senseless” incident.
Police were called to the mall’s parking lot Wednesday, after a woman claimed to see a black Audi speeding through the mall parking lot, intentionally hitting and killing the animals.
Constable Katie Forgeron says the majority of the animals survived, but several died at the scene.
“We’re concerned that somebody would go out and run over wildlife,” Forgeron says. “Those ducks reside there, although they are supposed to migrate in the winter time. They haven’t been, they are habituated, people feed them, they are there.”
Forgeron says charges under the Wildlife Act are being considered.
“Obviously if we find out who the individual is, we’ll be in touch with the Conservation Officer Service to team up with them to try to figure out exactly what charges,” Forgeron says. “We’ll have to wait and hopefully find out who was driving the Audi.”
Forgeron says the investigation has been closed after numerous people have called with more information.
