New clothing recycling bins at East Kootenay landfills are diverting hundreds of pounds of textile waste.
The bins were set up at the Cranbrook, Fernie and Sparwood Transfer Stations late last year.
The Diabetes Association monitors the bins and says between early December and late January, 8,410 pounds of clothing were kept out of the transfer stations.
The Cranbrook Transfer Station collected nearly 3,500 pounds alone. Here are the full results:
Cranbrook Transfer Station – 1,569 kg (3459.05 lb)
Fernie Transfer Station – 475 kg (1047.2 lb)
Sparwood Transfer Station – 200 kg (440.9 lb)
City of Cranbrook – 1,571 kg (3463.4 lb)
