Mounties warn fraudsters are ramping up their efforts in the East Kootenay ahead of Canada’s tax deadline.
Constable Katie Forgeron says they’ve received several calls over the last week of scammers calling residents claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency.
She says in some cases, they are even claiming to be from a local RCMP detachment.
“We received a call from a female who said that she hung up on the people. They called back and said they were members of the Cranbrook RCMP detachment and they were going to come to arrest her,” Forgeron says. “So we just want everyone to know it is a scam, please don’t fall for it.”
Forgeron reminds residents that Canada Revenue Agency will not call you over outstanding taxes.
She adds they definitely won’t ask for payments using iTunes cards, gift cards or Bit Coins.
