The National Day of Mourning is being recognized by communities in the Elk Valley.
The District of Sparwood is holding a ceremony at Centennial Square Saturday morning.
“We’ll be meeting in Sparwood at 11:30 and then marching over to Titan Park where we put up the new memorial for Balmer North.” says United Steelworkers Local 93-46 President Alex Hanson. “It’s going to be a big day, everyone’s invited.”
The City of Fernie also holds a ceremony Friday at the Miner’s Walk plaque outside City Hall.
Both communities suffered tragic workplace fatalities in the past year.
70-year old Pat Dwyer of Lundbreck, Alberta died at Teck’s Fording River Operations earlier this month.
Two Fernie employees and a Calgary contractor died at the Memorial Arena in October 2017 due to an ammonia leak.
