Operators at the Libby Dam are expecting a sudden run-off as BC’s snowpack begins to melt.
Steve Barton with the US Army Corps of Engineers spoke at a town hall meeting in Wardner Wednesday night regarding operations at the Libby Dam and how that affects Lake Koocanusa.
He says its been a cold and wet winter and snow conditions are still above normal in the Kootenays.
“We do have areas that have much more snow than they did last year and we are seeing the run-off beginning a little later than we did last year.” says Barton. “Those come together to suggest that we may have a spikier run-off where it comes off a little more suddenly but we’ll have to wait and see and monitor conditions.”
Barton says they are expecting to see above normal runoff this year, but nowhere near high levels seen back in 2012 and 2013.
