The District of Invermere wants residents and tourists to butt out in many of its public areas.
They’ve adopted a bylaw which bans smoking at beaches, parks and other recreation areas.
Mayor Gerry Taft says the ban has plenty of public support. “It’s really focused more on our beach parks and some other parks in town. We chose to stay away from sidewalks in our downtown core and restaurant patios. Some of those areas are covered by WCB regulations already.”
Taft says enforcement will mainly be carried out through education rather than issuing tickets or fines. “So, having our bylaw officer talk to people, in some cases maybe issue warning tickets, but we’re not looking at this as a way of generating any substantial amount of income. We’re not trying to be heavy-handed or wreck vacations for anybody.”
Taft adds the ban also pertains to vaping and cannabis consumption.
He says the bylaw is partly meant to reduce second hand smoke exposure for non-smokers.
