The Southeast Kootenay School District says a new rainbow crosswalk outside their main office will be a symbol of support and diversity for the entire region.
The District is unveiling the new crosswalk 11:30 am Monday morning.
Trustee Chris Johns says the District is committed to supporting LGBTQ students in East Kootenay communities.
“We’re going to focus on the creation of the very important symbolic statement of our support for not only the students of our school district, but also our staff,” Johns says. “They can feel safe, respected and accepted and that’s all part of the Human Rights Code of British Columbia.”
This is the second rainbow crosswalk to be installed in School District 5.
The first was put in place outside Fernie Secondary School by students and teachers last Spring.
