A Cranbrook parent is organizing a protest at Amy Woodland Elementary School to put the brakes to speedy and distracted driving in the area.
Jennifer Pierre says the protest is in response to last week’s incident where the school’s Traffic Suzie was knocked down.
Pierre says the cardboard structure has been hit ten times over the last five years.
“That’s twice per year on average. The fact that this is happening so frequently, it tells me as a parent that the adults around here don’t care about our school or the people in it.”
Traffic Suzie is a tool the school uses to remind drivers that they’re in a school zone with 300 students nearby.
Pierre hopes the protest will remind drivers to slow down and keep their eyes on the road.
She says the road is quite busy.
“Basically what happens is I think people seem to forget that this nice, newly paved road is a school zone. It’s not a time to check your phone, it’s not a time to do something else other than pay attention.”
The protest happens along 11th Avenue starting at 2:45 pm Thursday.
